Frequently Asked Candidate Questions

Can a prospective employer run a background check on me without my permission?

No. An employer must obtain your written authorization before a third-party screening company like MGO conducts a background check on you. This written authorization will inform you that the background check will be used in the employment decision-making process. You will also receive a copy of their Summary of Rights under the FCRA before the background check on you is run.

Does my employer share the results of my background check with me?

If any of the information contained in your background check is being considered in the decision to hire you, the employer must provide you with written notice before a final decision is made. This allows you time if necessary, to dispute information that has been reported in your background check. The written notice will be accompanied by a copy of your background check report and a Federal and State Summary of Your Rights.

How can I prepare for my background check?

First, you will be asked to sign a written authorization permitting the employer to conduct the background check. While every employer has their own specific background screening criteria, it is customary that you will be asked to provide your current residential address, Date of Birth and Social Security Number. Additional information frequently requested of candidates is driver’s license number, educational background (institution attended, dates attended and degree earned) and past employment history (including the names of your former employers, dates of employment and possibly your starting and ending salary).

What happens if I can't remember certain details that are being asked on my job application?

First, please don’t make up any information. Instead, provide MGO with as much information as you can and be as accurate as possible. A friendly MGO team member will reach out to you if we are missing information or if certain information needs clarification.

What kind of information does a background check include?

Every employer has their own specific background screening requirements based on their industry requirements, regulations they must adhere to and the types of positions they hire for. Most employment background checks include a criminal record search, verification of prior education, employment history and professional licenses. Driving records and drug testing are also common in employment background screening.

I have a question about my background check. Can I call you?

Of course! Please call MGO at 988-988-0075 to speak directly with one of our friendly and knowledgeable team members. We are available Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm PST.

Will someone contact me if there is a problem with my background check?

Yes. If an MGO team member requires additional information from you in the conducting of your background check, or if we have a question, one of our team members will reach out to you.

How long will it take to complete my background check?

How long a background check takes to complete will depend on the searches that are being conducted. Typically however, most U.S. employment background checks are completed within 3-5 business days. There can however be extenuating circumstances that cause delays in the process, usually involving court delays or unresponsiveness of past employers or academic institutions. Rest assured, MGO monitors all background checks for possible delays that might occur, and we remain in close contact with employers as to the status of all background checks.

What will I need to do if I need to take a drug test?

You will receive a Chain of Custody Form via e-mail or in person from your prospective employer. The form will list the testing site closest to the address you provided on your authorization form. While appointments are not required it is recommended that you check the testing site’s hours before you go in for the collection. Please bring your government issued photo ID and the Chain of Custody Form with you to the testing site. You may contact MGO at 988-988-0075 if you need us to change the testing site location or have any other questions.

How do I request a free copy of my background check?

If you would like to receive a free copy of the background check report that MGO has conducted on you, please contact us by using our online request form or by calling us at 988-988-0075. A friendly MGO team member will be happy to help!

MGO is happy to help if you find something on your background check that doesn’t seem quite right to you. To dispute information contained in your background check report, please contact us by using our online request form or by calling us at 988-988-0075.

Will an expunged record show up on my background check?

An expunged record (one that has been officially sealed by a judge) that has been properly filed with the court, should not be reported on your background check

Will juvenile records show up on my background check?

No. MGO does not search for records in the Juvenile courts.

Can I get hired if I have a criminal record?

While MGO does not make hiring decisions, and cannot speak for employers, typically the mere presence of a conviction should not exclude you from being hired. Each employer maintains their own specific hiring criteria, and most will conduct an individual analysis of any criminal records prior to determining a candidate’s eligibility for employment.
